THE GRÖDIGER MODEL

New municipal square Grödig  ///  Invited competition entry with PlanSinn Landschaftsarchitektur  ///  Grödig plans to create a municipal centre. Grödigs historic structure is based on detached (farm)houses that are surrounded by open land. Our proposal for the new centre elevates this historic structure to a model for spatial planning. We recommend to build three detached houses next to the old farmhouse ´Rosenlehen´. This creates a complex urban situation with no backsides, differentiated public spaces and changing lighting atmospheres. The scale of the houses is compatible with the economic capacities of local investors. The entrances to the houses are marked with large glass elements and light canopies. The canopies create a specific identity and enable flexibility in organisation for the business owners. Large trees and façade greening provide shadows and cooling in the centre and contribute to its climate resilience.
