Competition 3rd Place /// Demolition with Vision: Rethinking the Existing ///
![]()
A strategy of selective demolition and sustainable transformation converts a 1960s school building in Klagenfurt into a future-oriented educational campus accommodating a gymnasium (AHS > 25 classrooms), a college for early childhood education (BAFEP > 25 classrooms and a training kindergarten) and a university college of teacher education (PH > seminar and teaching spaces, including two training schools with 17 classrooms). The original clarity of the building’s structure is restored and combined with an open, flexible spatial organization that brings together the three educational institutions.
At the heart of the design is a central Rue Intérieure that connects all shared facilities, encouraging interaction, orientation, and informal learning throughout the campus. A new entrance hall with an atrium introduces additional daylight into the building while creating a distinctive focal point and a strong sense of identity.
The interior design emphasizes natural materials, a high-quality learning environment and a consistent circular approach. Modular timber components, demountable construction systems and reusable materials ensure long-term flexibility, adaptability and sustainable development.
Short circulation routes, barrier-free accessibility, and clearly organized functional areas provide optimal conditions for contemporary learning while fostering a strong sense of community across the campus.
